Feelin'/Not Feelin' List 2005
Last year I took keyboard in hand to type out the things I liked and disliked. Here's my updated list:

FEELIN'

NOT FEELIN'

\

  • Jet - "Get Born:" Young Aussie band releases a genuine Classic Rock album in 2004 and it's great! Love every track - there's not a riff on the CD invented after 1967 and borrows liberally from the Beatles, Stones, and Who of that period.

  • Brian Wilson - "Smile:" The great Beach Boys impressario gets the last laugh by finishing his abandoned masterpiece. If it had been released in 1967 as intended, "Smile" would be revered today as another great Rock album of the Sixties. As it is, it's the musical equivalent of "The Great American Novel." The genius is still there, and it's no small irony that the the most troubled Wilson brother is now the "last man standing."

  • AirAmerica Radio: I really didn't want to like this at first, but after spending much of the past year listening to Al Franken and especially Randi Rhodes, I have developed a whole new political passion and a deep contempt for the liars running the country right now. I had not been this politicized since Nixon was President but I am now!

  • Michael McDonald - "Motown Two:" I had been all psyched about the "Motown" CD that preceeded it and had been dreadfully disappointed when I finally got it. Happlily, Micheal seems to have fixed all the things I didn't like about the first CD in this much more satisfying second attempt. Love it!

  • XM Radio: It's the coming thing, and the only place you'll be able to hear anything new and exciting on their airwaves now that ClearChannel and Infinity own most of the radio stations.

  • Bobby Womack's Greatest Hits - When you talk about the great Soul artists, this guy always seems to get overlooked for some reason. He was instrumental in the recording or writing of many, many great Soul records as is amply demonstrated on this disc.

  • Prince - "Musicology:" This was one His Purpleness' better efforts in recent years and it had a nifty video, but at the end of the day with zero airplay, this disc didn't do as well as it deserved. His line, "Don't you miss the feeling music gave you back in the day?" pretty much summarizes how I feel about most of the stuff that's coming out in this era.

  • Velvet Revolver - "Contraband:" Ex-GnR players Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum team up with Ex-STP singer Scott Weiland and show their former bands that rockin' well is the best revenge with a surprisingly satisfying CD.
  • Four more years of Bushit!!! See my rant on the election. 'Nuff said!

  • It's the War, Stupid! How long can they go on with this sham? Who are we supposed to be defeating again? This military action is being run for the benefit of the "contractors" on site. The strategy seems to be run in a cyclical fashion with no vision whatsoever of an "endgame" in sight. Oh, and by the way, who is getting those petrodollars for the oil they're pumping?

  • Ashlee Simpson: I never thought that any Pop "singer" could emerge who would actually make Kelly Osbourne seem like an artiste. I mean at least Kelly did her own singing; bad as it might have been. Ashlee makes her older sister Jessica look like a Renaissance Woman by comparison. She's the Milli Vanilli of the New Millenium!

  • Michael Moore: Yeah he's on "our side" and "Farenheit 9/11" is a skillful piece of propaganda, but he's still a fat pompous jerk and I can't stand him!

  • Sec'y Rumsfeld: When that grunt in Iraq called him to task for not getting them the gear they need, the Secretary of Defense's arrogant reply let servicemen and women everywhere know how little their government values them. How does this man sleep at night or look himself in the mirror?

  • The Draft: Nobody's talking about it but yes, it's coming. With the military already overextended through extended deployments and "stop loss" programs, they can't NOT have it now. Am I the only person in this country who thinks this pointless, endless war is Vietnam all over again?

  • Consolodation of the Radio Biz: Is there any real reason that 3/4 of the radio stations in the country have to be owned by two companies? Weren't there supposed to be rules against corporate media monopolies? Wasn't there supposed to be oversight? There might be, except for the very selective enforcement policies of...

  • The FCC: Michael Powell and his cronies have dealt Free Speech another blow with their arbitrary fines and their newly acquired power to drive any broadcast company out of business if they so choose. And why is it that in a recent study 99.6% of these "complaints" they supposedly got were shown to originate from ONE watchdog group?
