·        Blows Against the Empire!  Steven Colbert puts in the comedy performance of the year at the White House Press Corps dinner, getting sneaky jabs in as Dumbya sat there and fumed.  All the chicken shit reporters got to see what a guy with CAJONES does! Since tight-assed Republicans have no sense of humor, maybe the White House thought he was a real Right Wing pundit! Oh boy, were they pissed and we lefties were LOVING IT!  It was the biggest reality check Bush had this year, the elections notwithstanding!

·        DEMS WIN HOUSE AND SENATE!  Thank God! America finally reached the “tipping point” with the war and with the Administration.  It still might be too late to save the Republic but at least it has a chance now.  All the implications of Democrats having investigative and subpoena powers give me a ray of hope in what has been mostly six dark years.

·        METS in 2007!  This a great time to be a Met fan, with Omar Minaya and Willie Randolph firmly in control of a well-stocked franchise with deep pockets.  There’s so much young pitching it’s almost an embarrassment and so much young talent overall.  There’s a lot reasons to look forward to a great ’07 campaign.   My favorite postseason acquisition so far is one  of my faves from the great ’86 squad - Howard “Hojo” Johnson replacing Manny Acta as first base coach.  LET’S GO METS!
  • STAYING THE COURSE ANYWAY! The pundits trumpeted that, “The People have spoken” and that the election was a referendum on Bush and the war.  But, exposed and rebuked though he may be, there is one man who still doesn’t get it; who still won’t listen.  There is one man who is determined to see this thing through to the bitter end, no matter what the cost. And the worst part is that man is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
  • CHENEY!!!  Just when I think I couldn’t hate him more than I already do, he always finds new ways of dropping his bar of loathsomeness to new lows.  Daughter Mary getting preggers is a little bit of comeuppance, he has SO MUCH MORE coming!
  • Military Commissions Act  With a stroke of his pen, President Bush declared our Constitutional rights “quaint” and invalid.  This legislation gives him the power to declare anybody an “enemy combatant,” hold them in jail indefinitely and subject them to torture if they want with NO LEGAL RIGHTS WHATSOEVER!  I don’t care whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat; the loopiest Liberal or the hardest-nosed Conservative.  IS THIS THE AMERICA YOU VOTED FOR? Didn’t think so.  So un-American and SO UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

“Impeachment is off the table!”

·        Bobby Kennedy Jr. – While the rest of the Kennedy clan seems more notorious for arrests than for public service, RFK Jr. is out there doing his daddy and uncles proud; fighting tirelessly for environmentalism and to expose election fraud.  His well-researched, hard-hitting article in Rolling Stone last summer was some of the ballsiest journalism this year. Especially considering how the Mainstream Media cowered and tried to ignore it when it came out!

·        Rolling Stone – Years removed from Lester Bangs and Hunter S, Thompson, Rolling Stone returns to journalistic relevance by publishing landmark articles like “Bush – Worst President Ever?” and the aforementioned RFK Jr. article on voter fraud.

·        Outgoing Georgia Rep. Cynthia McKinney – She has done some cool things during her time in the House and should be saluted here.  It’s too bad she lost her cool one day and went off on a security guard.  The GOP/Corporate Media Spin Machine ran with it and made her look like a mental patient.  Despite losing, she is due thanks for initiating articles of impeachment against Bush and Cheney, which of course will be ignored.  Alas.

 
  •  “Impeachment is off the table.”  My head almost exploded when on the day after the Democrats won back the house, incoming Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi made that statement.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!  This has been the worst presidency EVER – unprecedented in its corruption; in its arrogance; in its warmongering; in its “Slash and Burn” methodology.  They have done damage that our children and grandchildren will be paying for.  Their tenure has brought American governance to new lows.  OK, well let’s start with investigations and see where they lead… IMPEACH THE MONKEYFUNKERS ALREADY!!!
  • Celebrity Media – Imagine if the Bought-and-Paid-For-Corporate-Whore American Media gave half the coverage to the REAL NEWS that it does to Brittney, Ashley, Lindsey and Paris on a daily basis?  The panty-less upskirt shots of Brittney were a new low.  I mean, WHO F**KING CARES?! Who exactly has decided that the public has an endless appetite for news of Madonna and Brangelina?  Yet, Paparazzi content is a multi-billion dollar industry and celebrities are hounded mercilessly - sometimes to death like Princess Diana.
